• Textiles, Sewing & Inmate Clothing UCI 374

Since 1991 Utah Correctional Industries (UCI) has operated at the Central Utah Correctional Facility (CUCF) in Gunnison, Utah. Completed in 1999, the 48,000-square-foot facility is located on 100 acres of rangeland.

UCI manufactures a wide variety of textile products for state agencies and private sector companies, including heavy-duty outdoor clothing, tents, backpacks, duffle bags, camera cases, lens pouches, harnesses, helmet covers, uniforms, safety vests, pillows, and mattresses.

The textile shops employ staff members with degrees in clothing design and production. Staff members help train inmate participants to manufacture a variety of goods. Inmates learn textile skills such as sewing, assembly, cutting pieces, adding decorations and lettering, packaging and general office duties.

With over 200 machines and a work force of up to 200 inmate participants, the textile shops currently manufacture over 50,000 quality items per year. UCI produces a large assortment of uniforms, coats, mattresses, and pillows for every institutional need. Customized orders are also available.

Inmates have an opportunity to work in a team setting and learn the skills needed to accomplish goals. Working in this type of setting helps inmates learn the business and people skills that are a key to becoming successful in any work environment.
