Utah Correctional Industries’ Furniture Operation produces several styles of long-lasting furniture. From freestanding custom modular pieces to traditional and classic items, there is a style of furniture to meet any need. Wood furniture is made from the finest quality woods and finished with catalyzed lacquers. Some furniture and work surfaces can be manufactured using high-density plastic laminate or melamine.

Quality checks at each step of the process ensure the very best furniture at the most reasonable prices. Our combination of quality and price cannot be matched. With a variety of stains, woods, and surfaces to choose from, Utah government agencies benefit from the individual attention given to each piece.

Our commitment to customer satisfaction does not end with the sale of a UCI product. Our desks, bookcases, credenzas, and tables are warranted to the original purchaser to be free from defect in workmanship, when given normal care and use, for 10 years.

Inmate workers in the furniture shop use modern building techniques and operate state-of-the-art equipment, providing marketable skills that they can use to obtain employment upon release.

UCI had the opportunity to restore the State Capitol’s furniture. Click here to read the news story.

Organization, problem-solving, quality control, teamwork, and quality workmanship are all integral to the success of our shop and will likewise be invaluable to our offenders as they re-enter society and become a part of the community and local workforce.

Offenders have an opportunity to gain skills in multiple aspects of the furniture world. Some gain important computer skills as they handle the bid process, purchasing, preparing 2D and 3D drawings for customers, and creating/maintaining the paperwork necessary for the shop to complete the jobs.

Offenders are also able to develop valuable skills by operating machinery like our CNC, edge-bander, planer, shaper, jointer, rip saw, and sand-master. We also utilize a number of power tools like table saws, band saws, drill presses, routers, and miter saws. Lastly, our offenders use how to safely and effectively use various hand tools like orbital sanders, chisels, screwdrivers, hammers, mallets, drills, and router bits.

Teamwork is of the utmost importance to our success. Each department completes their portion of work on a given piece of furniture, then passes it on. This means that everyone is reliant on the department before and after them to maintain quality and uniformity. Each offender must conform to a unified rhythm to ensure each piece, no matter who builds it, will come out correctly.

In addition to these skills, our offenders have the opportunity to earn a Journeyman Certificate. This certificate requires over 5,000 hours and involves participation in every department within the shop.

We have many success stories as a number of our offenders have gone on to work in local furniture shops throughout the Salt Lake valley. A quality CNC operator can easily find work in a number of industries and a solid understanding of AutoCAD will ensure that members of our team will be on a great career path once they’re released.
