Horse Gentling

On April 1, 2006, and in compliance with the Wild Free-Roaming Horses & Burros Act of 1971, UCI partnered with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to form the Horse Gentling Program. Inmate participants in the Horse Gentling Program care for, feed, train, and gentle BLM wild horses until they are placed into private ownership through the BLM’s Adopt-a-Horse Program.

The participants learn skills in animal husbandry, wild horse gentling techniques, and equine care. The program assists the BLM by increasing the number of animals adopted and providing a permanent location available to hold, rest and gentle wild horses in route to adoptions or that have been repossessed. This allows for more horses to be removed from rangelands, which limits possible deterioration of resources and preserves the natural ecological balance of public lands.
